Right at the start of stage 3, the two young protegés Konychev and Stojnic from Team corratec formed a breakaway for the long stage from Vasto to Melfi (216 km). The duo led the race for nearly 170 km.  Despite heavy rain, the young breakaways led the race with up to 2’30’’ ahead of the experienced peloton. With 45 km still to go the up-and-coming riders Konychev and Stojnic still had a 1’45” lead over the chasing peloton. With the last climbs of the day and the finish line fast approaching the chasing peloton cranked up the speed and finally caught the Team corratec breakaway duo just before the cat 3 climb. What a marvellous performance by the young corratec riders on this long wet stage from Vasto to Melfi.
